ABOUT THE ARTIST
Over the course of her career, Candice Reyes has gained a reputation for being an active Latina jazz vocalist and composer in the southwest. Her innovative production is emulated over the course of her career and first album with Shade Records ~Crossing Over released in 2014, which collaborates with the group (Abel Mireles on Tenor Sax, Eric Unsworth on Bass, Mack Goldsbury on soprano sax, Ricky Malichi on drums, Arath Corral on Guitar, Kelly Durbin on piano and Shaun Mahoney on guitar) Candice Reyes, brings a youthful and refreshing sound to jazz.
Candice’s outbreak in the south west scene at the age of thirteen, emerged quickly. Once she began performing with professional musicians, Reyes rapidly earned a reputation as a talented and dynamic jazz vocalist. Reyes continued to perform professionally at local jazz festivals, concerts and events. In her recent album Crossing Over her tone and vibrant vocals express a young and lively storyteller. Aside from leading her own band, the young vocalist collaborated with various artists and projects. She has sung with local groups in the southwest: Place Space Project, Fuego Latino, Azucar, Pete Escobedo, Riboflavin, Billy Townes, EP Jazz Quartet, Team Havana, Border Jazz Orchestra, Lab Band (UTEP Big Band), El Paso Symphony and the Boardwalk Jazz Band and many more.
Candice Reyes studied at the University of Texas at El Paso, with her bachelors in Commercial Music, Vocal Performance. Born into a musical family, the vibrant vocalist has evolved at a fast pace.The young singer not only expresses herself through her luscious voice, she interprets her natural character through song. Candice continued her musical talent all through grade school. The young singer participated in the Youth Jazz Ensemble and had the opportunity to share the stage with special guest professional saxophonist Dave Pietro .
In 2003 Candice Reyes entered a local competition "El Paso Idol" where she was announced the winner and represented El Paso with her powerful voice. Candice continued her education in 2004 and received a scholarship by the El Paso Friends of Jazz non-profit Organization. Not only is she known for her sultry vocals and petite figure she began leading her own project "Candice Reyes Quintet". Candice has been involved in the Jazz scene in El Paso, Tx and southwest area and continues to be a big part of the progressing scene. Since she now considers New Jersey as her new home, the young vocalist has been equally involved in the east coast jazz scene. The jazz vocalist says, her passion is making good music and capturing her audience.
Leading her group has played a major role in her career with business management, discipline, creativeness, professionalism and more. Candice Reyes Quintet, has a modern and distinctive twist. The group evolved through talented musicians with the same perspective, idea and creativity to collaborate and share ideas.The group slowly evolves wherever Candice takes it. Candice Reyes and her love for creating music, relates to her spirited personality. The Candice Reyes Quintet was featured at the 3rd Festival International de Jazz Chihuahua in 2013. Various jazz artists attended the jazz festival such as Joe Lovano & Judi Silvano, David Binney, Tom Kessler Trio and many more great artists. The Candice Reyes Quintet has performed in various jazz clubs in NYC such as; Tomi Jazz, Bb flat authentic bar, Silvana, Shrine NYC. Candice Reyes has performed as a featured and guest artist at; Zinc Bar, City Winery, Silvana, Liberty House Restaurant, Moore’s Lounge, Hopewell Valley Vineyards, The Coffee Grind, Langosta Lounge amongst others.
The talented vocalist is currently living in New Jersey with her husband Abel Mireles, who is an active professional saxophonist. Reyes and Mireles are both eager and active to new opportunities and experiences that await for them. Candice strives on perfecting her craft and collaborating with different musicians. Candice Reyes, also tapped into the music education department, where she was musical director for choir, piano, guitar at Loretto Academy School in 2014-2015. Her knowledge in music education is a vast variety of choral and jazz vocals, fundamental piano courses. The vocalist also shares her talents and experiences as the emerging musicians community concerts coordinator for a local arts community non-profit organization "Jazz House Kids" founded by jazz vocalist Melissa Walker, based out of Montclair, New Jersey. Through this experience the vocalist has had the opportunity to meet and be in the presence of great jazz musicians: Christian McBride, Melissa Walker, Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Pat Metheny, Jerome Jennings, Ingrid Jensen, Jennifer Vincent, Chris Potter, Ron Blake, Freddie Hendrix, Shamie Royston and many more. The vibrant vocalist broadens her horizons as a writer, composer and lyricist. The jazz vocalist continues to perform in New York City, New Jersey.
